Calculem a frustação ...

Tento tocar todas as minhas experiências.

NG

special was the "soul" in his playing, and if you immerse yourself in his music, you will will hear what John meant. Davey had somethingvery personal and deep. some of my favorite moments of his on disc are on a few George Handy records from the mid-50's - some of which may
have been reissued on the Fresh sounds label. I'm not sure. I know that Davey gave me a cassette of one years ago that he was particlularly fond of. To use an overused and sometimes vague term, "spiritual" is an adjective that comes to mind when thinking about davey's playing. He does not deal in licks and phrases - he creates in a linear fashion and really floated above the regular demarcations (if that sounds Prez, it's no accident. He loved Lester's playing and always talked about it).He was an original in many extramusical ways, too, and the unfortunate manifestation of some of those tendencies resulted in his absence from the jazz world. He was a devoted family man who had difficulty keeping a career going while having a wife and child at home.He also had a life long obsession with extra-terrestail objects, of which he was a

serious student.Allan Lowe recorded Davey in the 80's, and tried very hard to get him back into the jazz orbit. I got to work with him several nights through our mutual friend Bill Triglia. One memorable gig was an extended New Year's Eve party where I played piano and he played tenor (you should hear him on tenor on Eddie Bert's School Days record in the 50's with Hank Jones -classic!!). I taped that night. I also have a tape of another concert I did with Davey with (I believe) and Mel Lewis, Marky Markowitz, Dick Katz and Eddie Bert, in addition to a few more. He also played at the uptown Birdland with Eddie Bert and Duke Jordan - I think that came out on Uptown Records. There is also an extended interview on the topic of Lester and Bird that I did with Davey in 1981 that I have to get around and publish some day. It aired on WKCR here in NYC back in the 80's a few times.I tell you all this so you know that he was documented way beyond that one Miles session. He recorded with Kenton, Oscar Pettfiord, Tony Bennett and may others. Sometimes the bebop alto legend stuff is

But this time something was not completely the same. No one else was there. No signs of Alice no signs of Jimmy .
Rashied knew at that moment that it was going to be just Trane and him in the room.
No indications were given to the drummer about form, mood, tempo.
Rashied later recalled he asked "Is this going to be slow like a ballad?’ or ‘Is this going to be in a
certain time, like 3/4 or 4/4?’ … Because, you know, he would just ring
the bells, pick up his horn and start playing.”

Coltrane had complete confidence in Rashied's listening awareness and playing ability: “I can really choose just about any direction at just about any time in
the confidence that it will be compatible with what he’s doing,”he said .
The name of the tunes relate to the planets from the Zodiac circle. a subject Coltrane cherished and explored for a long time.

The result is a marvelous recording that inspired a lot of other playing for the sax/drums duo.
Celebrating 52 of Coltrane / Ali "Interstellar Space" this post is on the previous and following recordings of saxophone and drums duets.
The death of Jazz is a subject that is being periodically addressed by some jazz "critics" who, since Charlie Parker blowed over Cherokee, cry out loud that "Jazz is dead".
Take those "critics" seriuosly and Jazz have died over and over again.
The subject has not surfaced in quite a while but with the recent publication of an article by the Weekly Standard very unoriginally called "John Coltrane and the Death of Jazz" a propos the recent finding and publication of some lost Coltrane tapes, made the jazz network react.
The article has a blunt, provocative tone, is very well written and is full of those easy-to-catch epithets : "proto-hippie Eden Ahbez", "Alice Coltrane, the Yoko Ono of jazz", "Duke Ellington, the Debussy of the big band" with the clear goal of attracting discussion (and clicks) but with a great deal of musical ignorance disguised as erudition. The article is specially corrosive towards the "late Coltrane" period. Would love to read what Jon Irabagon will -I hope- write about this.
IMO the article is crap. Very well written crap.

I share the article and (pianist) Richie Beirach's response to it.

What Mr. Beirach wrote is worth this whole discussion.
Saxophone is the most popular woodwind instrument in the world.

Why? Don't know.

Coud it be because it is the easiest instrument to play... badly ?
Cause it's shinny and curvy and looks good in the pictures? or because it lends
coolness to the ones who blow it?

And
who cares whether you can play it or not ! Let's take a pic with one
hanging from the neck (our neck...) and everybody will call you a sax
player !

Here goes a some pics of famous people playing the saxophone,
none of them known as saxophone players, just to prove that.... Everybody Loves
Sax.

He died by overdose in 1969.
Played with Terry Gibbs, Frank Rosolino, Chico Hamilton, Charles Lloyd Larry Coryell, John Handy , Miles Davis, Bobby Hutcherson , and Gerald Wilson.
But maybe one of his carrer's highlights was playing with the Miles Davis quintet at the Harmon Gymnasium in Berkeley University April, 7th 1967 subbing for Ron Carter.
The whole band was there (except Ron, of course). Maybe it was for this gig with Albert that, after his death, Wayne Shorter was inspired to write the beautiful "This is for Albert" dedicated to him.

A very rare (until now :-) bootleg of this California Miles Davis concert with Stinson on bass is available here in flac format. Among collectors this bootleg is know as the "Cabinet Tapes". Enjoy!

P.S: At some point in a interview with Ethan Iverson Wayne Shorter tells:

"EI: You mentioned Bud Powell a second ago. I heard your song “This Is For Albert” was actually for Bud Powell.
Albert. Powell,” and I said, writing this song, “This is for Albert,” and actually he was saying something like that Bud Powell played at Albert Hall, and I just threw the Albert in there."

Today came to my mind a fun game my facebook friend Bill Plake used to do with his friends and jazz students:
A written solo based on the changes of an well know standard but... no chord changes on the paper.
All you got to do was to find which standard was that solo based on.

Of course Bill tried (with success) to give a hard time to all who tried to solve the riddle - substituitions, metric modulations, side-slipping and all the tricks of contemporary jazz trade.
So, fresh from my pen, here's a similar challenge, but much much simpler than Bill's:

Which jazz standard the next etude based on?
Curious to see how quick you'll find it.
Not even Shazam will help you !!!

No more notes than those stricly necessary for the line to shine over the lush, exquisite comping of Florian Weber. Maybe "comping" is not the right word. Florian worked as an instant arranger with a keyboard orchestra making each note of Lee's melody the top of a exquisite harmonic construction.
Interaction within the band and a strong conversational mindset was on from the first note.
Humor, lots of scating and standards.
90 years of musical wisdom.A Jazz Yoda surrounded by masters of "true improvisation" !
Long live !
A rarity found in an old portuguese shop by Andreas Schmauder fom http://www.78rpm.org/

The 78rpm by the Luis Rovira Sextet recorded presumably in 1948 featuring Don Byas on the song "Lisboa Antiga" by Raul Portela.

Don Byas moved to Paris in 1946 and toured Spain in 1948.

It's a well know fact that Byas had contact with Portuguese music in 1968 when he recorded with portuguese fado diva Amália Rodrigues but no other recording of portuguese music was know until now.

Byas appears only on this song and the musicians in Luis Rovira sextet are not identified.

As found here they probably were Luis Rovira (clarinet, leader), Leon Cardona (Colombia, electric guitar) José María Cigno, (Argentina, drums), Alberto Lorenzetti, (Argentina, piano) , Zdenék Jirak, (Czech Republique, vibraphone) and Manuel Molina (Peru on bass).
